About the maker

My name is Mac McCabe and I am an artisan based in the heart of rural Lincolnshire. I enjoy history, philosophy, the great outdoors and getting in the workshop where I like to make beautiful & functional everyday use products.

Ever held an object and thought "I reckon I could do a better job of making this"?

The Galloglaich Workshop started as a personal project, mainly as a result of my interest in the wilderness and it centred around the challenge of making highly functional and beautiful bushcraft knives from rudimentary tools.

I had developed a growing disappointment with the quality and durability of "off the shelf" knives, tools & equipment. This increased with the rise of online sales platforms, and I found that the market was flooded with poorly made and overpriced items. Companies were compromising on their materials, finish and quality controls in order to shift quantity onto us - the unsuspecting consumer.

  • Machine stamped knives with plastic handles that are impossible to keep sharp,

  • Wallets of bonded leather that are poorly stitched and fall apart,

  • Belts cored with cardboard and a surface finish that flakes after a year.

If you have experienced any similar frustrations with these examples, then you'll know exactly where I'm coming from. These kinds of issues ignited my interest in starting to make my own knives and equipment. I decided that if I wanted items that were functionally brilliant and aesthetically perfect, I would have to do it myself.

It was much harder than I first thought, and in the early years I made many objects that were chucked in the bucket, but with time my skills and knowledge steadily improved, and eventually I was making items that were getting closer to my goal.

My repertoire of experience grew over the years, and suddenly I found I was making all sorts of objects that were desirable to the people around me. This ranged from kitchen knives through to belts, slings, bags, wallets & some items of jewellery. With this realisation the thought of starting my own small business formed.

The Gallóglaich Workshop is a one stop location where you can find quality, customised, everyday use items that are as unique as the patrons using them.
